Look at the top 100 websites search list. How far down the list do you have to go before the listings seem to be off topic? Second site? Tenth site?

Here is a more reliable check on competitors. Search Google on your main keyword. What is it - 150 million competitors. Now in the Google search box click on the preferences link and choose to have one hundred listings per page.

Look at the Google search again and you will see that they only show the first ten pages, which is 1000 listings at 100 listings per page - that's a lot less than a hundred and fifty million. Go to page 2, 3... Hey what's this!? Google runs out of listings a long way short of the tenth page! If you find that Google lists 350 instead of a hundred and fifty million competitors it is quite encouraging.

But now look again at the first page to see how many listings are on topic. If your site is about cabbages, and 350 sites have the word cabbages somewhere on their sites they will be listed. It might be a site about Alice in Wonderland that refers to cabbages and kings, but it will be listed.

So search on "allintitle: cabbages" (without the quote marks) and you will get a list of sites that have the word in the title, which means that the website designer has at least made a small effort to optimize the pages for the search engines.

Now look for relevance to your cabbages and nutrition site. There are 25000 competitors, but only the third one might have something about nutrition, and none of the others have anything about it. So you don't have many competitors.
